NITI Aayog to Work with Google to Boost AI Adoption in India

AITo support the initiative of digital India, the government think tank, National Institute for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog has decided to join hands with Google to work on cutting-edge technologies like machine learning, AI, and IoT. The government of India has decided to spend $480 million on the development of next-generation technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, Internet of things, 3D printing and blockchain to form the digitalized ecosystem across the country. The Ministry of Commerce and industry has released a report regarding the adoption of the AI in India; it constitutes an AI policy with a five-year plan mission with a targeted investment of $184 million.

Google and NITI Aayog have decided to work together to implement the deployment of AI in various sectors of India. They will be organizing AI/ML learning classes for the students and developers based on Google’s Machine Learning Crash course (MLCC) on the fundamentals of machine learning. Several Hackathons will be organized to focus on using AI/ML and open sets to solve key challenges within agriculture, education, healthcare, etc. in India. Google team will mentor the Indian start-ups for the better utilization of the AI in their business model. The government will be providing scholarships and approval for the researchers, scholars and university faculty working on the cutting edge technology like AI/ML and also provide the training to government personnel to acknowledge them about the open source AI tools.

Commenting on the collaboration, the CEO of the NITI Aayog, Amitabh Kant said, “India is embracing future technologies such as machine learning and AI to augment its capacity in health care, improve outcomes in education, develop innovative governance systems for our citizens and improve the overall economic productivity of the nation. NITI’s partnership with Google will unlock massive training initiative, supports start-ups and encourage AI research through Ph.D. scholarships.”

NITI Aayog, the think tank of Government of India, was founded in 2015 with an aim to achieve the sustainable developments goals. Lately, NITI Aayog has been planning on the Indian strategy along with National Data and Analytics portal to develop and use AI technology in India. With Google, India is going to unleash its power of digitalization. Till now, NITI Aayog has already conducted two international hackathons on artificial intelligence and also initiated a national case competition to explore the utilization of AI in agritech.
